They are also known as balloonfish, blowfish, bubble fish, globefish, swellfish, toadfish, and turkey fish. These fish can be found in warm and tropical waters all over the world. They typically live in shallow reefs and lagoons, but can also be found in deeper waters. Puffers range in size from about 2 inches to over 3 feet long.

Puffers can be dangerous to humans because they contain a toxin that can cause paralysis and even death. The toxin is called Tetrodotoxin and it is found in the puffer’s organs, especially the liver. Tetrodotoxin is so potent that just one gram can kill up to 10 people.  It is 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. There is no known antidote for the toxin, so it is important to avoid eating any part of a puffer fish.

Despite the risks, Pufferfish, or Fugu, is a popular dish in Japan. The fish is often served at special occasions and celebrations. Pufferfish sashimi is the most popular way to eat fish. Candiru

Candiru, also known as the toothpick fish, is a small, parasitic freshwater catfish found in the Amazon Basin. Candiru is scaleless and has a sucker-like mouth with sharp teeth that they use to attach themselves to their host’s body. Once inside the urethra, the candiru’s barbs anchor it in place and it feeds on blood. This can be extremely painful and can sometimes lead to death. There have been several reports of candiru attacking humans. The first recorded incident occurred in 1838 when German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller documented an attack on a Russian explorer in the Amazon Basin. In 1997, there was a widely publicized incident in which a candiru allegedly entered the urethra of an American swimmer while he was bathing in a river in Brazil. The best way to avoid an attack from a Candiru is to wear tight-fitting clothing when swimming in the Amazon River.
